01Why people look for a Smith.ai alternative
Smith.ai is a well-established virtual receptionist service: real people, trained on your intake process, answering 24/7. Businesses that leave it usually do so for one of three reasons — the monthly bill grows with call volume, overage per call adds up on busy months, or the plan tiers are sized for law firms and mature service businesses rather than a two-person operation.
If none of those apply to you, Smith.ai is a strong product and this page will say so.
02What Smith.ai is, in their own terms
Smith.ai publicly positions itself as a live virtual receptionist service staffed by North American agents, with published receptionist plans billed by number of calls per month (Starter, Basic, Pro and Enterprise tiers), each with a per-call overage rate above the included volume, plus a 30-day money-back guarantee. Their marketing leans heavily on legal intake, and their case studies are dominated by law firms. (Public pricing and positioning, checked September 2026.)
03What Kalyvox is
Kalyvox is an AI receptionist for small and mid-sized businesses. It answers every inbound call in seconds, understands the request in natural language, qualifies it against scenarios you define, books into your calendar, transfers urgent callers to a human, and sends a structured summary by SMS and email. Pricing is a monthly plan plus actual call usage, with no contract.

05Who is Smith.ai best for?
- Law firms and professional practices where the first conversation is part of the client relationship and a human voice is non-negotiable.
- High-value, low-volume intake: if 20 calls a month decide six-figure matters, per-call pricing is rational.
- Complex, emotionally loaded conversations — bereavement, disputes, sensitive medical topics — where scripted qualification is the wrong tool.
06Who is Kalyvox best for?
- Businesses with real call volume and no front desk: contractors, clinics, garages, agencies, property managers. Above roughly 60–80 calls a month, per-call pricing stops making sense.
- Teams that need the same qualification every time: same questions, same fields, same handoff — no variance between agents or shifts.
- After-hours and weekend coverage without a surcharge, because the cost of availability doesn't change with the clock.
- Owners who want self-serve setup: keep your number, set call forwarding and configure the assistant directly.
Kalyvox handles inbound calls, qualification, lead scoring, appointment booking on your calendar, warm and blind transfers, SMS and email alerts, and per-scenario behaviour you can edit yourself at any time.
07The honest trade-off
An AI receptionist is not a human receptionist. On an unusual, angry or highly ambiguous call, a Smith.ai agent will improvise better than any voice model. What Kalyvox gives you instead is consistent coverage across opening hours and after-hours periods: the same configured workflows apply at 3am, on a bank holiday or on a Tuesday morning.
The right question is not "which is better" but "what does a missed call cost me, and how many do I get?" Run the numbers on the cost per handled call page.
08How to switch, or run both
You don't have to choose blind. Keep your Smith.ai plan running, point overflow and after-hours calls to Kalyvox during the free trial, and compare the transcripts side by side. Many businesses end up with a hybrid: AI on first contact and overflow, humans on the calls that deserve them.
09FAQ
Is Kalyvox cheaper than Smith.ai?
It depends on volume and call duration. Smith.ai bills by call volume while Kalyvox combines a monthly plan with actual call usage. At low volume with very high-value calls, Smith.ai's human intake may still be worth its price.
Can Kalyvox handle legal intake?
It can run structured intake — conflict-check questions, matter type, urgency, contact details — and route or book accordingly. For firms where every first call must be handled by a trained human, a live service like Smith.ai remains the safer choice.
Do I have to change my phone number?
No. You keep your existing number and set up call forwarding — all calls, or only unanswered and after-hours calls.
Does Kalyvox transfer calls to a person?
Yes. You define which intents trigger a transfer, and to whom. Urgent calls can also fire an instant SMS alert while the caller is still on the line.
How long does setup take?
Self-serve, with a guided configuration. There is no onboarding call to book and no setup fee.
